California Building Efficiency Standards for Residential and Nonresidential Buildings

California Code of Regulations, Title 24, Part 6

The Energy Efficiency Standards for Residential and Nonresidential Buildings were established in 1978 in response to a legislative mandate to reduce California's energy consumption. The standards are updated periodically (usually every 3 to 4 years) to allow consideration and possible incorporation of new energy efficiency technologies and methods.

California's building efficiency standards (along with Appliance Efficiency Regulations) have saved more than $56 billion in electricity and natural gas costs since 1978. It is estimated the standards will save an additional $23 billion by 2013. California is divided into 16 separate climate zones each with their own set of requirements for Title 24 part 6. In order for the home owner or builder to comply with Title 24 they would first start by looking up what climate zone corresponds to the city or county where the building permit is being sought. The next step would be to decide which type of compliance is right for them.
